Search Console email reports: what Google sends you, and what it doesn't

Search Console emails property owners a monthly summary, and owners and users about issues. Here's how to turn those emails on, how to get a weekly one, and a daily search email that works with restricted-user access.

Does Search Console send email reports?

Partly. If you own a property, Google may email you a monthly summary of your Search performance: web clicks, impressions, and your top and fastest-growing pages and queries, compared month over month, once the property has three months of data. Search Console also emails owners and users about issues, such as a new indexing issue or a manual action. Google's help describes no weekly or daily performance email, and no setting for the metrics or the delivery time.

01 — Steps

How to get Search Console's emails

  1. Check your role.

The monthly performance email is for property owners. Owners, full users and restricted users all receive messages; restricted users only get the ones that affect them.

    Settings,Users and permissions

  2. Open Email preferences.

From any page in Search Console.

    User settings,Email preferences

  3. Keep email on.

"Enable notification by email" is on by default. Untick it and Search Console stops emailing you for every property; messages still reach the message panel.

  4. Re-subscribe to what you muted.

The list shows only the message types you've unsubscribed from at least once. Set a type's Status to Subscribed to get it again.

  5. Give it three months.

The monthly email needs a property that has been collecting Search Console data for at least three months. It goes to your Google account's email address.

Everything Search Console emails you also lands in the message panel (the bell icon), kept for a year.

02 — Limits

What Search Console emails, and what it doesn't

The monthly summary.

Web clicks, impressions, pages seen for the first time, top and fastest-growing pages and queries, devices, and clicks by search type (web, image, video, Discover). Compared month over month.

Issue messages.

A new indexing issue, a manual action, the result of a fix you asked Google to validate, a permission change.

  • Owners, maybe.

Google's help says that if you own a property, you "might receive" the monthly email.

  • Monthly, at most.

Google's help describes one performance email, and it's monthly. Nothing weekly or daily.

  • Three months of data first.

A new property waits at least three months for its first summary.

  • Month over month only.

Pages and queries are compared with the previous month. There's no day-over-day or week-over-week view in the email.

  • No metric or time setting.

Email preferences let you subscribe to or mute each type of message. Google's help describes no setting for the metrics, the day or the hour.

  • All properties, or none.

Preferences are per user, not per property: muting a message type mutes it for every property you have.

03 — Weekly

Need it weekly? Google's route is Looker Studio

  1. Connect Search Console.

In Looker Studio, create a data source with the Search Console connector, pick your site, then a table (Site Impression or URL Impression) and a search type.

    Create,Data source,Search Console

  2. Build the report.

Add the charts you want. The emailed PDF uses the report's default date range and filters.

  3. Schedule it.

Add up to 50 recipients, a start date and time, and how often it repeats, including chosen days of the week.

04 — Troubleshooting

When Search Console's email doesn't show up

  • No monthly email.

You're not an owner, the property has less than three months of data, or you unsubscribed.

Fix: Re-subscribe in User settings › Email preferences. If you're a full or restricted user, ask an owner to share it.

  • Emails stopped for every site.

"Enable notification by email" is unticked. It's one switch for all your properties.

Fix: Tick it again in Email preferences. Your per-message choices are kept.

  • Can't mute one site only.

Preferences are set per user, not per property.

Fix: Mute the message type for all your properties, or filter by site in your inbox.

When Search Console's own email is the better choice

  • You want the queries and pages that grew, and once a month is enough.
  • You need Discover, image or video search: Morning Pulse reads web results only.
  • Either way, keep its issue emails on: Morning Pulse doesn't send indexing or manual-action alerts.

07 — FAQ

Search Console email questions, answered straight.

Does Google Search Console send email reports?

Can I get a weekly Search Console email?

Not from Search Console itself: Google's help describes a monthly performance email, not a weekly one. Google's route is Looker Studio: connect Search Console as a data source, build a report, then use Share › Schedule delivery to email a PDF on the days you choose. Morning Pulse emails your clicks, impressions, CTR and average position every morning at 7:00, each compared with the previous day, last week and last month.

Why don't I get Search Console's monthly email?

Google sends it to property owners, and only once the property has been collecting data for at least three months. If you unsubscribed, re-subscribe in User settings › Email preferences, and check that "Enable notification by email" is ticked.

Who receives Search Console emails?

Owners, full users and restricted users receive messages; restricted users only get the ones that affect them. The monthly performance email goes to property owners. Email preferences are per user: you can only change your own, and they apply to all your properties.

Can I choose the metrics or the time of Search Console's email?

Google's help describes no setting for either. Email preferences let you subscribe to or mute each type of message, for all your properties at once. Morning Pulse lets you pick your KPIs and arrives at 7:00 in your time zone.

Does Search Console email me when my traffic drops?

Its emails are about issues: a new indexing issue, a manual action, the result of a fix you asked Google to validate. Google's help doesn't describe an alert for a drop in clicks. Morning Pulse doesn't alert on Search Console either, because the numbers land days late. Instead it puts each day's clicks next to the previous day, last week and last month every morning, so a drop is hard to miss.

Why are Morning Pulse's search numbers 2 to 3 days old?

Morning Pulse asks Google for final Search Console numbers only, so you never read a partial day. They arrive 2 to 3 days after the day they cover. Each number in the email shows that day, and its trends compare it with the previous day, last week and last month.

Not once a month. Every morning at 7:00.
